今日、アメリカCNNのニュースを見ていたら、アメリカの炭酸飲料の消費についての報告がありました。それによると、近年アメリカ国内で炭酸飲料の消費が非常に伸びており特に若年者の消費が多いと言うことでした。１３歳の子供で平均男の子が一日３本、女の子で２本の炭酸飲料を消費している計算になるそうで、とても驚きです。まぁ、ビールをワンケース一晩で飲みきってしまうカナダ人を知っている自分からすれば、その量は「彼らならありえる」と思うのですが、それにしてもです。
レポートの続きでは、350ccの炭酸飲料にはティースプーンにして約8.5杯分の砂糖が含まれているそうなので、若年者の糖尿病の原因になりかねないとしていました。確かに、コーラなどの炭酸飲料は、振って炭酸を抜いてしまうととても甘くて飲めたものではありません。糖尿病もさることながらこれだけ砂糖を摂取すれば、虫歯になりやすいことは明白です。それでも不思議なことに日本に比べアメリカは砂糖の消費量で３倍も消費しているにもかかわらず、虫歯が1/3しかないのは何故でしょう？
アメリカをはじめ先進諸国では上水道のフッ素添加が常識的に行われていますし、１００％の歯磨き剤にフッ素が添加されています。日本では歯磨き剤にフッ素が添加され始めたのは十数年前からだと記憶しています。砂糖に代わるキシリトールなどの代用甘味料も最近になって一般化したほどで、やはり立ち遅れているとしか言えません。もちろん虫歯は色々な原因が絡み合って起こる疾患なので原因を一つに決めつけることは危険ですが、少なくとも砂糖の消費量だけでないことは確かで、まだまだ遅れている日本の虫歯予防の現状を改善するには、啓発活動を含め歯科医のなさなくてはならない役割はまだまだ残っていると思います。
